    About What Is?

whatis.com is a knowledge exploration tool about information technology, especially about the Internet and computers. It contains over 4,000 individual encyclopedic definition/topics and a number of "Fast Reference" pages. The topics contain about 12,000 hyperlinked cross-references between definition-topics and to other sites for further information. We try hard to keep it up-to-date.

whatis.com was started on a dining room table by writing down a number of words we wanted to look up quickly. Why not be able to point to a word (or click on it) and have information about it appear magically before you? And why not put this long sheet of clickable words on a display screen?

By September of 1996, we had 350 words on our "wall of words" and we've been adding them ever since. We also continually revise the definitions.

Popular features include Every file format in the world, A Fast Guide to Tutorials, The Speed of... (a table comparing data rates), and the International System of Units. A unique feature, called Learning Paths, enables users to read related definitions in a sequence as a form of tutorial or self-education.

In March 2001, whatis.com was serving over 75,000 user sessions each business day. Suggestions, links, and comments have been received from over 10,000 contributors (many listed on our Credits page) representing over 60 countries. Users can subscribe to a daily "Word-of-the-Day" by registering at whatis.com.
