    About Waterstone's Books

The first Waterstone's bookshop opened on Old Brompton Road in London in 1982. By 2003 the company had grown to become the UK's leading specialist bookseller, trading from almost 200 high street and academic campus shops across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Waterstone's flagship branch on Piccadilly in London is the biggest bookshop in Europe. With specialist floors concentrating on fiction, academic genres and children's books (among many other subjects) it is a great resource for booklovers everywhere. A great 5th floor bar helps to relax our customers in between heavy bouts of serious browsing. Waterstone's in Gower Street, London, is our flagship academic branch, and Europe's biggest academic book specialist. We have similar superstores throughout the UK, including Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street, Bridlesmith Gate Nottingham, Deansgate Manchester, High Street Birmingham and Milsom Street in Bath.

Waterstone's reputation over the last twenty years has been built upon an unparalleled high street range of books, and enthusiastic and knowledgeable booksellers who are happy to recommend the best books in every field to our customers. Waterstone's tries to provide a welcoming and enjoyable environment in which customers can browse and choose books. In 2002 a programme of refits helped to turn some of our best branches - such as those in Trafalgar Square and Kensington in London, or Stratford-upon-Avon, Edinburgh Prince's Street and Oxford - into leading regional bookshops.

Waterstone's runs regular national promotions including Waterstone's Book of the Month and children's book of the Month. Customers have grown used to the reliability of these recommendations. The Paperbacks of the Year promotion in the run-up to Christmas has been enormously popular, offering the definitive annual round-up of the best in both fiction and non-fiction.
